work life balance! as an example, say you were coming from a much nicer city and only worked 3-4x a week making above average income (enough to live comfortably but not luxuriously well off) — is it worth moving to a faang company that is notorious for a stressful wlb just for more compensation and career growth? a better question for more senior and seasoned veterans: what is more important in the long run? any regrets grinding up the corporation ladder at the end of the day, or do you wish you lived a more stress free life?
If you want to make apps you can use in the shitter, yes.
I spent about a decade as a slacker developer, never really challenging myself. I was paid well but bored making shitty software for shitty clients. I studied hard and landed a job at Facebook and it’s pretty awesome. The perks are great and I’m working with a bunch of smart people who hold me and my work accountable - very few tick and flick reviews etc. Anyway, I can see why some people hate on this place for various reasons. Maybe in time I’ll also grow tired of it. My plan is to get my vested stock, cash out and go back to slacking.
How long would it take to get the vested stock?
My initial offer was 4 years for double my base. Then there’s top ups given along the way.
Depends on how old you are. I am kind of in a similar boat but I know that when I am older and have responsibilities of a family I’m not going to have time to improve my career. Might as well keep my foot on the gas pedal until that point
Notorious for stressful wlb? Hmm, looks like you're overestimating the stress level at FANG, or at the very least G.
I stated joining “A” faang company “THAT” is notorious for WLB. In the context of my question, It’s simply asking if the trade off to join a more stressful work environment is worth it, just for $$ / career growth
Ah, in that case I'd think it's probably worth doing it for a year or two.
I’ve worked at several Faang companies and haven’t found WLB any worse than startups or older mature tech companies. But the pay and benefits were much much better. So yeah it’s easily worth it if you get an offer.
I moved from Wayfair to Facebook and have yet to find the WLB stressful. Compared past lives with 60+ hour weeks as a startup executive, this feels very laid back. I'm in the office from 8-5:30, WFH when life happens, and am able to contribute at a high level. I am cognizant of my time and using it efficiently. I'm still on the East coast, so that may impact things. YMMV
Makes sense. Are you an engineer?
Engineering Manager.
