no college degree, have two years of coding experience from high school and some personal android development. did lc starting this april, solved about 100-125 problems. started applying for jobs and i have three offers from interviewing at 5 companies. have it/sys admin background but no swe background. i got offered total 90k in socal, just accepted an offer. if i am able to get through the interview process, what difference does having a degree make? it seems like i have the skills they are looking for without ever going to college.
job market is insane right now. Won't be like this forever.
They say “everyone can learn to code” and it’s true. But only in the same way that “everyone can learn japanese”. Most people won’t do it.
How low are the bars at tier 2, like Microsoft?
Which 5 companies?
3 defense contractors, servicenow, and Qualcomm
What TC do they offer?
People dont act, they dream. You are someone who acts. Congrats on the new job
Thank you!!
Defense contractors bars are low, you'll find out!
Wouldn't working there, gaining actual professional experience and knowledge, then few years down the line applying at bigger companies like in bay area work out though?
Not without a degree.
Maybe bar is low outside of the FANG
If your A is for Amazon...than that’s not true.
Interview at FAANG and the likes and then comment interviews are easy Also, with yoe it will only get harder. Don't live in the bubble
Can you expand on what you mean?
Ageism is real. What seems like a low bar with a couple of years of middling experience will start to feel insurmountable after a certain yoe, no matter how much you've proven yourself in your main career, or how much effort you've put in to keep yourself up-to-date in your spare time.
A degree makes you eligible to apply for most good roles in top companies. It may or may not value add for some people, but thats what it is.
So without a degree you'd be automatically disqualified?
Depends. Google doesn’t require degree for example. But some companies strictly attach B.S. or M.S. to the Minimum Requirements of their positions.
Yeah Google wasn't that hard and Amazon is a joke. Just have to study.
Even people with only 3-6 months bootcamp experience gets hired now.
How much LC should they do
