I have always wanted to start my own business. There were days I used to discuss ideas with friends after work over coffee/food. Those days are gone and while I didn't become an entrepreneur, I did get my Masters degree, moved to the silicon valley and became a successful senior engineer. Right now in the rat race to increase TC.

The other night I was sleepless and these dreams of being an entrepreneur kept me awake till morning. I am a senior engineer, I have no business degree or Entrepreneural experience. But this desire is driven mainly by two factors -
The first is I have always felt I can do so much more beyond my role as an engineer. I enjoy building large complex systems but strategy and the business side of things have also always interested me and come naturally to me. I feel the time is right to build new products and services whether it's in the EV segment or AI or so many more areas. Funding is available and we have so many talented engineers with access to more resources than ever available in the past.

What do you think I should do? Have you ever had similar interests? Have you ever started your own company? Do you have ideas of the next big thing? What's your story?

PS: I won't be revealing the second factor.

How does that work exactly? Because I don't have any sizable assets to invest

You can look into angel syndicates, e.g. AngelList has a minimum investment of 1k. You need to be accredited to participate. Thanks to the JOBS act there are also lots of crowdfunding platforms now that will let you invest in startups even if you're not acreditted (I have no experience with that)

  • I’m a college student and I agree hundred percent with what you said. My second factor would be getting financial independence and being my own boss. I am probably going to graduate school or joining the industry after graduation but entrepreneurship is my first choice. The problem is I don’t have money, experience, or a good idea.
