Finance vs tech showdown

Dec 22, 2021 14 Comments

Bored at work & Interested to hear Blind’s take considering TC is pretty similar for wildly different jobs (yes TC for nyc finance can match bay SWE). Which is harder to break into, and which is harder to climb the ladder at?

For tech I mean “prestigious” team at FAANG+
For finance I mean top Banking or PE firms

And by all means; please debate in the comments u savages🍿

Edit- revenue generating / front office for finance

Assuming pay is similar, why would anyone want to go to finance and have: longer hours, worse culture, and limited-to-no WFH?

Fair point. My comment applied to those who can choose: tech in finance, quant / DS, and those generally smart/skilled enough to do either career

    • This tech TCcalypse started few years back. People who are in finance or tech now they chose their journey 5-6 years back atleast. They did not know how the future would be like as in today. May be next generation would take a more concious call.

  • Taking work hour into account. I’d take SWE anytime. And coding is fun.

I’ve heard that bonuses are insane in finance jobs, though that might only be hedge funds etc

Yea for revenue-generating departments. On the extreme end, a year with great performance might net a high-level worker $200k base + $1M bonus.

For non-revenue-generating departments bonuses are much lower.

I think hedge funds have the highest potential w no upper limit but banking/pe can get up there too. Main difference is TC in finance is base + cash bonus, tech includes RSU’s, etc

I used to be a teller at Wells Fargo in high school. Tech pays more, like way more... True about the bonuses in finance though. I got a couple of Andrew Jacksons around the holidays. Probably prefer tech, but the heady days in high finance were good too. Rolling around town in my Oldsmobile and my white shirt/tie. I looked pretty boss, some prestige value there.

I hope this is a joke. Reminds me of the scene in the office when Ryan tells Michael Scott to tell girls he’s in finance and he goes up to one and says “yea I’m a bank teller” and she immediately walks away. Bank teller / consumer banks != finance

Haha, yeah, it is a joke. I wasn't really bragging about my Oldsmobile.
