good management books

I have to start managing people, and I'm having issues. I find plenty of quip non-science advice online. Is there a book out there that document objectively what works with people measured in reproductible experiments? Sciency-like.

Management is so broad, it really depends on what you're trying to accomplish with your team, and sometimes with each individual or even eac interaction. There is no single book that gives you the basics. If you don't have a specific issue, pick up a subscription to Harvard Business Review. You'll get an idea of some of the latest thinking by management academics and professionals. If a topic strikes you as interesting or relevant, look up the authors and you'll either find other articles, books or academic papers on the topic. There's actually a lot of science in modern management theory. It's the extreme variation in human behavior that make the results less predictable than traditional science. If you really want a book, try something by Edward Deming. It's a bit old, holds true but is probably going to come across as general and be difficult to directly and immediately apply. MBAs sure looks attractive now

edit: Also, since you mentioned looking for science like management advice. Try to not fall into the trap that many technical people fall into when making the transition from engineer to manager, and that is treating your co-workers and employees like machines. You will hate them because they won't act like machines and they will hate you because you'll be micro managing them.

    Good luck
