Are you worried about Qualcomm's future because they haven't taken action on pay disparities with competitors?

Getting heavily recruited from other companies offering much higher pay and comparable benefits. I like Qualcomm and think it's a good company, but who wouldn't want to get paid more? I'm starting to interview elsewhere as are many others in the company. If they don't improve compensation, will we lose our competitive edge because our best engineers leave?

  • Senior Staff Engineer with a few reports. TC $340K. No / Manager title yet as I need 4. Have an active offer from Amazon as L6 TPM with a TC of $300K. Rejected the offer but the recruiter said other groups who are willing to beat QC TC are willing to take me without going through the full interview process. I am thinking QC EM to AMZN TPM to AMZN SDM. Will be a $80K To $150K bump.

Qualcomm will never pay as much as the “internet” companies.

I am ex Qualcomm and was there in Modem team for a very long time. Every all hands , the topic of compensation comes up.. in cristianos , tonys, org level etc. yet nothing changed meaningfully. Some of us modem folks got a “out of turn” pay increase of like 2-8% and were told that we should be thankful of it because not everyone was getting it , only that later we figured out literally every guy in our floor got it lol.

In managers 1:1 they either lie or put up a good resistance when asked about compa ratios , even though HR specifically says that employees have the right to know about compa ratios.

In 2015 during the layoff , some folks did get rentention bonuses, but in classic Qualcomm fashion, the bottom tiers ( Staff and below) were left out. Same thing happened in 2018 when Sr Staff got $180k retention and yet low level folks like me got the shaft.

Just look around building Q in a normal pre pandemic days. You will see all old people and very few young people. Not much to learn tbh. I learnt a lot and tried to keep my chin up even when friends were leaving left and right with $400k offers.

One day i just decided to leave and never looked back, and now i hear half of my ex team at Q have quit to Apple or Google.

Qcom management has realised that it doesn’t need to pay top tier money to make top tier modems. As long as this equation remains true, nothing meaningfully will change, if it changes it will probably be more directed towards higher level folks.

If you are core CS grad, there is no good reason to stay at Q.

Tbh, I think the company is well positioned for the future IF it can retain good engineers. But good engineers are realizing they're good and can get better pay, so I'm worried higher attrition may impact the business.

  • Leaving in few months!! More than money, I am not excited about the day to day job I do here. Slow and bored of doing the same thing for years. I am already tired of working on 5G.
