Is it appropriate to ask recruiter this?

BAD TIMING

Recruiters reach out all the time.

When they are a head hunter or recruiting agency they always say “psssst hey we got a really cool job with high impact and more TC” but they never disclose which company or firm it is in the initial email.

Is it rude to just reply and ask them to name the company and what the pay range is?

I hate wasting time talking to them on the phone.

The only recruiters that don’t mention the company are those hiring for contract jobs

I’m not sure. The comment below makes sense. They want to make sure you apply through their agency so they get a fee from the company for helping I guess.

Applying through agencies usually means a contract job. Atleast that’s what I’ve seen in my teammates who are contractors

If they don’t work for the company doing the hiring I am not talking to them. Middlemen are a waste of time.

This is completely appropriate to ask. Most of the time they will want to talk with you first. Their fear is you’ll learn which company, apply directly, and then they lose their fee.

How would they lose the fee since they would be the recruiter for that role anyway? So how does it matter how you apply?

Oftentimes, but not always, a company hires multiple headhunters. Or, they’re willing to pay a finders fee. However, this gets muddy if you, the applicant, just apply on the company website. At that point, the recruiter is at the mercy of you to list them as the referer.

  • Why would you entertain email from recruiter not having a work email or signature?

Every gig/contract, I ask for the co. name, remote or not, then tell them rate I’m aiming for (market rate/inflation included), and ask for them to “advise” on it. If they lowball, I move on. You can also google the 1st half of JD to see who else is posting the job. If it’s a Meta role, go straight to the Meta contract job site. I avoid calls and do majority on email until above is done.
