Software engineer vs competitive programmers

Feb 8 5 Comments

It's become super hard for a good, well rounded swe to land a top tech job. They need to morph themselves into competitive programmers to stay relevant. Post pandemic, with interviews done on coderpad/hackerrank with requirements to pass all test cases, kids should be taught competitive programming right from High school 😂

Competitive programming is not for everyone and it's super hard to be at a good level as you age and have other priorities.

What do you guys think?

LC is not exactly the same as competitive programming. It's far easier and God I hate competitive programming (top coder style) but I love LC.

I find competitive programming more math and trick based as compared to interviews which focus on basic data structures and algorithms (LC style)

    • Google that was my experience few years ago, you could get away with the basics and good communication on whiteboard interviews. The level lately has been super high with tricky questions, solving problems on something like coderpad and you are required to solve 2 questions in like 40 mins or less.

Does Google use coderpad now? I thought they only used GDocs.

It feels more stressful now that the interviews are happening on coderpad. The added pressure for code to compile in the first attempt and try out test cases within 45 minutes for 2 questions is very stressful. I am already nervous in the interview and tend to make typos. It’s anxiety inducing.

  • I think it’s why people start entering non programming roles like EM, PM, TPM, etc. Hard to keep up.
