I recently got an email from a recruiter at Boeing about a job that is surprisingly a perfect match for my background. It is some kind of sensor system R&D with exotic compound semiconductor devices. Although I have moved from intel to FAANG now and not really looking I am curious about these kind of positions. It is in a very desirable location (not bay obviously) and from the description it has a number of unusual perks such as pension plan and guaranteed job security. It requires secret clearance at start and the top secret clearance within a year so I suspect it’s a weapons system development. (Maybe it’s some other entity operating under Boeing umbrella)

Has anyone had any experience in such companies pros and cons. Obviously if you do you can’t talk about the nature of the work but just general workplace conditions.

Also what impact does maintaining a top secret clearance have on your personal and social life ? I assume there will be some limitations.

I doubt If the pay is as much as my FAANG or even ex intel job but a job for life in a desirable location likely with subsidized housing and a pension deserves a hard and long look

Appreciate any feedback

Why to you think you have job security? Boeing has gone through layoffs cycles

OP is talking about Boeing Defense which AFAIK hasn’t had any layoffs and is a separate business unit that has actually been doing quite well in comparison to the commercial side.

  • I’m pretty sure this would be at HRL in Malibu.

I think the only benefit of working in defense R&D (like DARPA stuff) is that you’re not doing the same thing all the time. You get to work on many different things in the design process, much like if you’re in a academic lab. Another benefit is that the job usually is not high stress.

If you’re comparing TC- aero/defense is not great. From my experience LM in the Bay Area has the highest TC, but still a lot less than FAANG.

Having a clearance does not impact anything imo. You just have to report any foreign travel and any foreign contacts that you’re in regular contact with.

How long does it take to get the top secret clearance and what is the process like ?

Also what is the ballpark TC for these positions ?

      Thanks

  • Since when does Boeing still have a pension, they got rid of that. Must be some wholly owned subsidiary.
