Recently moved from Microsoft to Google. One of my ex-coworkers at Microsoft has asked me for a referral at Google. Is there a certain time frame that I need to let lapse before I can do referrals for ex-coworkers?

It’s never been tried in court (or at least it hadn’t like 5 years ago). I wouldn’t worry about it unless you’ve been told by google not to (doesn’t hurt to ask HR).

Amazons policy was for a year. When I switched companies amazon started threatening the new companies lawyers about the no compete clause. New company lawyers weren’t concerned but just wanted to confirm with me it wasn’t too closely related to what I was doing at amazon. They did tell me though not to poke the bear and start trying to refer people I knew until that 12 months was up.

Wow, where are you based? I've never heard of Amazon trying that.

Seattle. I was pretty surprised myself. It’s especially odd because I didn’t hide where I was going, I spoke to my chain up to VP about it. I even gave a months notice and they didn’t walk me out.

I heard a rumor it was the manager I had at the end but I don’t think that’s very likely. I didn’t like the guy all that much but he wasn’t petty. Then again I have a habit of not seeing how conniving / underhanded some of my managers have been until they left.
