McKinsey BA experienced hire position make sense for me?

Jan 6, 2021 6 Comments

I have a Masters degree from a target school and 3 years experience in risk management in a bank. Got a call from a recruiter offering a BA position in Risk practice. She said match will be made in terms of compensation based on experience.

Am I being tricked here?
What does this career path look like? My classmates were BA straight out of undergrad, where will be compared to them?

I’m currently an associate and was hired an associate. Need some perspective

Not my area of deep expertise, but I'd say your background merits more than a simple match in comp.

McK is good but I’d be hesitant to jump into consulting right now as a lot of McK projects are client facing. Mix that in with a billable hours utilization target requirement and you could be in a bad place. Wait until things go back to normal or join a FAANG in the meantime.

If my above scenario doesn’t apply, take the job. Consultants live on the road. Expect a majority of your time on per diem, in hotels, airline lounges and banging your coworkers.

  • Those who join as BA's from undergrad can become Engagement Managers in 3 years. Your career progression in a risk role will most likely be slower than the BA's

You should at least ask to be considered a 2nd year BA. I understand the hesitancy in making you Associate directly as that’s an MBA role.
