MBRDNA unable to meet $145K salary expectations

Apr 19 9 Comments

I’ve been interviewing with Mercedes Benz Research and Development North America for a Development Engineer - Telematics Artifical Integellience Testing role.

The job is based in Long Beach, CA and they are unable to meet my salary expectation of 145K. I think this is pretty reasonable based in the cost of living there and considering I already make 95K in my current role in Michigan (which is below market rate compared to then other OEMs).

Is 145K a reach? Are lower salaries typical of MBRDNA?

Comp: 95k base + annual bonus

YoE: 5+ in Automotive Product Development, 3+ in Infotainment software integration and Telematics

Education: 2 Bachelors in Engineering, 1 Masters in Engineering

  • Honestly I would say keep pushing for 145 if you're okay with walking away. For 5+ yoe, you could get that at GM, easily.

I’m thinking they’ll probably try to pay you around $120k. You can maybe push for 125 or 130 max. Long Beach COL is higher than Michigan but it’s among the lowest for SoCal, so keep that in mind. Plus you’re talking about a traditional OEM here. Go with Rivian or one of the EV startups if you want better comp

    • Thank you! I appreciate the recommendations. I was thinking of staying somewhere between LB and LA. I think LA COL is a little higher than LB, but I’ll take that into consideration!

  • Unfortunately, expectations should be tempered when going from one major legacy OEM to another. Have you tried applying to any of the EV makers?

    • What salary range do you think they’d go for then? Taking the location / cost of living increase in took account.

And yes, I have. Lucid and Tesla.

Stay away from MBRDNA. Toxic place, selfish Sunnyvale Management, busy with getting on pictures with celebrities. Haven’t delivered anything in years, filling their pockets, strong nepotism. If you want to get a promotion make sure you massage CEO.

Probably the professional level of that position (not Senior) doesn't reach 145... information is public through H1B and Green Card filings, so you can see online what to expect. MBRDNA is not known for paying high salaries.
