Security Engineer at Amazon

I hear a lot about how bad Amazon is. Is it worth it to interview for a Security Engineer role with the Threat Intel team? What should I expect and be prepared for?

I don’t know what you’d have to prepare for a security engineer role to be honest. But what I can tell you is that Amazon is not as bad as what’s described on blind (which is a very biased community in my opinion).

Personally, I have a really good work life balance. But it took a while to get there. I struggled very badly at first and almost got PIPed (my manager told me that, but I saved myself by doing what I describe next). What I decided to do was have an honest conversation with my manager and leads and talk about my struggles. After that, they put a lot of effort into making sure I had what it took to succeed, and it worked (every person is different of course).

It’s my opinion that if you’re honest about your strengths and weaknesses, about what you can and cannot handle, and keep an honest and open line of communication with you manager then you’ll be more than fine. It is incredibly hard to hire at Amazon, so they don’t just fire people like that. When they make a decision to pip someone they do it after careful consideration (in my opinion). There are times where it can be incredibly hard, but those are anomalies in my opinion. You can control your destiny at Amazon (although sometimes there are storms). Half the job is attitude which is basically our leadership principles, the other half is knowledge. They recognize that you might and likely will have a huge knowledge gap (and that’s totally normal, and they’re prepared for that). But they won’t reach you attitude.

As long as you have the right attitude and keep open communication with your leaders you’ll be more than fine. Absolute worst case it doesn’t workout with Amazon, you still have their name on your resume and that will open even more doors for you.

I’m a SecEng at AWS. My experience will be very different from yours, as I’m embedded within a service team. The Security of org is huge, and full of smart people. You’ll learn a ton, and probably have a bunch of fun along the way. My advice is to make sure you have an open line to your manager. At amazon, no one tells you that you can or can not do something. If you see something that has a gap, just tackle it. If you say “hey this thing is broken someone should fix it” you will be expected to try and fix it, or take the lead to get it fixed.

Security at AWS is number one, and the org really does take it seriously.
