Lets assume that you get an opportunity at MSFT for an SDE and a Cloud Solution Architect role. Which one would you choose? Just curious

    I’ve done both, W/ 18 years swe.
Most folks here don’t have the soft skills for consulting. CSA is way harder. Undefined goals, dealing with ambiguous people, untangling decades old processes.... honestly submitting CLs and writing design docs is relative easy. Even collaboration is easier with engineers. But dealing with business people at the same time? Ouch.

  • CSA keep jumping on different project, you don’t feel ownership. The other bad part is that you (or your manager) need to create unnecessary work to keep working (depends on the engagement)

If you are a builder, go SWE
If you are a sales man or architect, go CSA
