How to go from Consulting to SWE

Oct 1, 2020 21 Comments

My background is in CS and have a 1 year internship in SWE but when I graduated last May I decided to try consulting and now realizing I don’t like working in MS Office all day. Want to go back to building stuff and coding but not having a lot of success. Any advice? I have a good number of hackathons and startup competitions under my belt.

How can a fresh grad be a consultant? You basically know nothing.

    • Consulting firms like to hire new grad because its easier to train them then people who have had worked in industry for very long. Also consulting is a very broad term, it varies from providing implementation to guiding clients and brainstorming with clients to find answers.

Im looking forward to this exact switch. Hated consulting.. Starting next month in a big tech company. My two cents:
Leetcode everyday! With a full time job it gets difficult. Target atleast 3 questions every weekday. Go crazy on weekends. Find question banks : Blind 75, Epi, ctci, leetcode again
Apply through referrals ( you can also message people on blind asking for referrals - Many are wiling to help)

I got 3 offers and all resulted from interviews that I got from referrals (one was a Blind referral)
Also, dont be discouraged. The talent pool is pretty saturated with layoffs in the industry, so it's difficult. The interview anti-loop is a real thing. However, if you keep at it, you'll get through.

  • Lol you sound almost exactly like me. Hit leetcode hard and try to get on software projects if you aren't on one already (I was on one at D) so you can put something technical on your resume for D. But most importantly leetcode hard. Entry level positions are really rare right now so could be a year or more to switch.

Did your experience count/transfer to wherever you exited to? I’m also in a similar spot except I code daily.

    • I only have 1 YOE so not really - basically everyone with 1 yoe is still working as an entry-level software engineer so I'll be joining them. (It's still worth doing, even at entry-level!)

  • Checkout this guy who runs algoexpert.io (no I am not promoting the site). He is an example of someone who ground it out for 6 months to join Google.
He has many youtube videos that should give you some direction. https://youtu.be/3IlaxZf3-s8
