As a L5 googler, my next promo maybe in 3-4 years... if I'm lucky. Many people never get higher than L5. Would jumping ship to FB for diagonal movement be a stronger career path? i don't want to stagnate... thx.

  • Recruiter here. You’ll likely be same level as they are pretty equal at both companies. However, promo is more likely at FB. At google, I saw a lot of my peers stuck at L5 for 6+ years and just stuck and no growth. They got complacent and used to it unfortunately. I think your best bet is to move around. I’ve also re-hired googlers when went off to get more experience elsewhere and sometimes they were up leveled when they came back depending how strong their experience was and how well they interviewed. Good luck

Google usually consider Facebook E6 to Google T5. This is based on my conversation with a hiring director recently.

Your hiring director is indirectly trying to talk you out of considering a move that might be beneficial for you. I don’t know if anyone who went to Google from FB and took a little down. Google and FB levels have been roughly one to one except for senior management levels where Google folks coming to FB sometimes take a level down.

Just ask you director how many FB E6 engineers has he/she seen coming to Google. My guess is the answer is zero because the number is very small for the whole company :)

This similar to the line MS uses to keep people from considering other opportunities by talking about how you only get to work on really deep technical problems at MS

You likely would not get promoted switching. Most top tier companies down level
