currently a manager at netflix for several years startup is post series C joining as a director of engineering with growth potential(i hope) TC 550k yoe 15, 10 as a manager any advice on how much my salary shoild be and equity?
Are you an engineering manager? Which org in Netflix?
revealing question
I am, org doesn’t matter much I’d say
Rip your TC.
Nothing will come close to what you make now, when you calculate in risk and dilution. It’s not worth it.
I doubt if startup is going to match your current TC. You should avoid until this startup is B2C and raised more than $250M in funding and valuation went up by at least 4X in last 1 year.
I am not looking for a match. Suppose they have 250m - what should I ask for realistically?
Pure RSU. No options. Ask them to beat your current TC else it's not worth it in every respective.
These guys are idiots for not being to answer your question. Obviously TC will take a hit but the reward can outweigh the risk if the startup takes off. That’s the whole point of going to a. startup. The real answer to your question is what the startup is. Obviously don’t reveal it but depending on their revenue, how much they raised, you would then be able to better assess how much to ask for. How recently did they raise their series C (generalize don’t be specific) and how much did they raise (again give a range don’t be specific)? TC at a startup is definitely a case-by-case basis. What everyone was right about though was coming in as a director. You need at least Senior Director on VP track or VP.
Understood. Yeah everyone thinks in terms of TC only, I am looking from the career point of view. Startup closed C round a year back I want to jump in before round D. Raised tens of millions of dollars last round that’s all I can say unfortunately, You never know for sure what happens to it but it’s worth exploring imo My team will have 30-40+ people to begin with
Ask for VP title and $250k base outside the bay, 350k in the bay. They need your FAANGness and will pay for it.
Why do they need it? Thanks for advice ! What about stock
Get as much stock as they'll offer. Its 50/50 still if it will ever be worth anything. They need it because they are coming out of market fit into scale, and it is completely different mindsets, managers, and often SWEs that take the co through the next stages to scale. Startups are ugly inside, more spaghetti process, code, and emotions that usual, especially as the startup is beginning to appear successful enough for the psychopaths to really try to get their name and hands in everything. It's likely to be your most difficult managment position and the maturity of Netflix will swing like a hammer with the weight of their world.

That’s a good idea, thanks. Although everything is negotiable so I wonder how far I can push it really
