Why would they layoff? They have enough cash that even Federal Reserve is borrowing from from them

      That's not how corporations work.
If a company doesn't have cash, they will layoff. But converse is not true.

That being said, Google is not laying off anytime soon.

You'd think that but see Microsoft in 2009. Never had layoffs before, considered "safe", tons of cash in the bank. Still did massive layoffs, then within a year probably had as many employees as before the layoff.

Over half of Googles work force are contractors, I highly doubt FTE’s will be touched even in a recession.

  • Google has way more than necessary ppl in gcp, so will not be surprised if layoff starts there. And don't compare the"no layoff for Google in 2008" case, at that time, google is at a much smaller size so it can survive. This time, not sure

GCP is the only org which is hiring at full speed. Google is giving it all its got to make GCP work as its critical to Google's long-term survival. Whether they will be successful is another matter (hope they learned something from their Google+ train wreck). I do see a disturbing trend in the type of nonsensical job postings cropping up for GCP now and then. Its almost like TK wants to build another Oracle and that would be a disaster as it is diametrically opposite of Google's culture and way of working. WTF is a Process Excellence Leader???

Well, you called it. My husband was an SWE (not a contractor) at cloud and got laid off in July. No PIP, no chance to look for new placement, no dings in his reviews. In fact he got a raise not to long ago.

I just saw an article that Google is rescinding offers for all contract workers due to their Ad revenue.
But I think cloud and Platfrom should be fine
