Hi everyone, I have a flight from San Francisco to New Delhi. Booked it via two separate reservations (two different tickets)
1. San Francisco to Dubai by Lufthansa
2. Dubai to New Delhi by Air India
These bookings are not on the same ticket and the layover in Dubai is only 80 mins. My question is - can I request Lufthansa to transfer my luggage on their own to air India? I asked them, they said I can request that when I check in at SFO. They can not guarantee it. Has anyone done this before? If I need to pick my luggage and redo check and security, there’s no way I will make that connection.
Second question is, assuming that the luggage transfer is possible, do I need to redo security etc again at Dubai? Would be great if someone who has done this can share their experience. A point to note here is that Lufthansa and air India are members of star alliance, not sure if that helps.
Thanks!

Jokes aside, I would hardly think it’s possible. 80 mins layover is insanely low for international connections. Planes do get delayed especially on long flights. Moreover, different airlines can be operating out of different terminals. Thankfully you don’t need a visa in UAE and is an excellent city to spend time if you miss the connection.
Check if the terminals are same.
The problem is when it’s different tickets. You have really make sure those two airlines are coordinating, same terminals and baggage handling. You also won’t get anything if you miss connection. And if you don’t have visa for that country you can’t even exit or go to another terminal to catch different flight. You can take the risk all you want but not sure why you think 80 mins international layover on separate tickets is as easy as the same pnr.
Anyways I am not going to indulge in this stupid discussion any more. International flights are expensive and I get paid peanuts. So can’t afford missing flights. I will get less anxiety if the connection is on the same pnr and the layover is enough.
I deal with this on a day to day basis and I know what I'm talkng about and my initial point still remains i.e. if you don't have an idea as to what you are talking about then do not comment as you are causing FUD! It's as simple as that.
