A FB PM recruiter reached out to me yesterday about initiating the PM interview loop. Needless to say I’m quite surprised considering that I went to a non-prestigious state school and don’t work for an elite company whatsoever (currently not at DTCC). I’m assuming recent events such as their whistleblower scandal and “the great resignation” etc. is opening some opportunities.

However, I just began my new PM position a few months ago so I plan on requesting the recruiter to be contacted again in 6 months. I figured in the meantime it’ll be optimal to start preparing now. Just wanted some feedback on my strategy ahead of time:

1. Read the usual PM books (Cracking the PM interview, Swipe to Unlock, Sacred Seven etc.)

2. Sign up for Product Alliance and watch the free Exponent videos on YouTube

3. Mock interviews, like a shit ton, while receiving feedback and improving my answers overtime

4. I believe FB PM interviews don’t ask technical-heavy questions, so no need for systems design prep? Please correct me if I’m wrong.

I plan on allocating these steps throughout a span of 6 months. Feel free to let me know if I should consider adding other elements for preparation!

  • As a PM from FB, I would frankly be surprised if you got in, coming from a place like DTCC

Facebook never asks any coding questions so you’re good. Honestly, I would just study for 1-2 months and go for the interview. My friend never had PM experience, still passed it

What's wrong with DTCC. Is it the experience coming from a company that is not FAANG or something else? Can you explain a bit more

I’m quite confused with the way FB screens for resumes. I have friends from Ivy League as well as no name schools/companies that have gotten in with 1-2 months of studying and NO prior PM experience at all. They legit only read cracking the pm interview. No leetcode, no experience with agile, no tech background…This is for the RPM interviews specifically

Seems like once people get past the resume screening, only their interview performance matters. Product sense and product execution. Questions are so open ended that any answer is a good answer as long as it’s “structured”

I could be wrong, but that’s my current “data set”

@Amazon yeah that's kind of the idea of RPM, it's super-junior. It's mostly kids (early 20s) who are clever but don't have much PM experience. Some of them are excellent, they're quick learners.

  • You’re not far off. FB optimizes a lot for structure and clear communication, so a ton of ex McKinsey folks end up in PM roles there
