I've been contacted by a Google recruiter who wants to 'explore some opprotunites' with me. I'm content with my current job but would definitely be up for a move if the price and job role is right.

I've never interviewed with one of the larger software companies before as my current job is my first post-graduation, I haven't interviewed in a while so I'd like to schedule my interview at least 5-6 weeks from now to make sure I'm prepared.

Can anyone provide tips on what tools I should be using to sharpen up?

I've heard a lot about certain tools, such as Cracking the Coding Interview, HackerRank and Leetcode, but have no experience with them myself. What's the recommended path here?

  • as with any other big companies, prepare for a metric fuckton of bs, as usual. they'll interview you like you'll be launching rockets into outer space, but in reality you'll work on shit like hangouts

  • The recruiters and such will routinely tell you to brush up on algorithms that you haven't used since in school and won't even use there, but they're interested in nonetheless. Interviewing is so broken. Prepare to waste months on nothing that'll benefit you or the company. Good luck.

    • The prep session is useless. Goes over what's in cracking the coding interview. It's also available even if you don't make the onsite, or even have an interview lined up at all.

Just ask for the on-site prep session. It's meant to get you used to the format and calm your nerves. Here's what I've determined about Google/Facebook/Amazon/Microsoft/Netflix etc...style interviews - the interview is an IQ test. Can you cram and "get good grades" in difficult CS classes just like the smart kids in undergrad ? If you can then studying will prepare you well to succeed at the interviews.
These interviews are really IQ tests in disguise - they are meant to choose people with high information processing/problem solving rates (the smartest people). A very small percentage of people hired this way are false positives - so the technique is quite successful.

Solve problems on Glassdoor and CareerCup websites. If you are rusty 6 weeks probably won't be enough time. You'll know you're ready when u can solve the problems quickly and without googling for answers.
