Hey guys my roommate thinks she is going to get an offer from Apple wireless software team. She was working at a small company where WLB was pretty chill usually. She was laid off due to covid and has been searching for jobs for quite some time. She knows that WLB at Apple is pretty bad and she is ready to work hard but she is worried that this is new for her plus it's going to be wfh and if the team is not welcoming and not helpful during ramp up and stuff, the manager might think she is not performing upto the expectations and they might let her go because of it. Is this very common in Apple? I know Amazon pips severely, how is it at Apple? Any advice on how to perform well and ramp up quickly for someone who has only a year of experience. How to survive in Apple? Any tips would be really helpful guys.

PS: I am posting on behalf of her because she doesn't have a company email I'd and she is not able to post anything on blind because of it.

Apple inside is 100 different companies and their own culture. Unless you talk specifically with someone from same org, you are unlikely to get really helpful information. From my experience - Apple software engineers on average put in 6-8 hours of work, no late nights or week ends, except for occasional firefights and close to deadlines. Thanksgiving week is off, so are 2 weeks around Christmas. This is my org of course.

First of all it is ai ml. Second of all it is not β€œchilled out”. You can coast anywhere but you won’t move up at Apple if you do and your refreshers will suck. And coasters don’t usually come here - that’s a google thing.

Wlb at wireless software is pretty bad. But that happens close to deadlines. Unlikely that she'll have deliverables right away. Cant fire that soon anyway, unless severe underperformance.
Besides given how pushy apple is about ending WFH, she might end up being on site soon.

After getting laid off by a small firm, a job at Apple might be a good thing, should give stability and learning opportunities.

I guess it depends on the team because I have had a very pleasant experience. I’m San Diego based, but not in wireless software.

On what basis do you come to the conclusion that WLB at Apple is pretty bad ? A study ? An article ?

WLB can vary from team to team. One way to judge would be for an interviewee to ask the right questions during the interview and form an informed opinion.

I can bet every big company has atleast one group or team with a bad WLB. We can’t label the entire company as having a pretty bad WLB.
