We recently got an Amazon CEO too :/ Might be downhill for Bolt as well, only time we'll tell.
No one is against firing low performers if they deserve it. The issue is when there's a quota to fire that has to be met regardless of performance. That means people are incentivized to throw each other under the bus to try to save their own skin.
If a company hires a former Amazon executive for a top position then I have to question their ethics. Unless the executive makes it clear Amazon is not the way to run things and they won't bring those policies over.
