All,

Looking to diversify my portfolio and invest in Indian real estate. But, being in the US I don’t know which locality to choose, how to negotiate the price, how to send money and all the other aspects associated with it. What’s the best way to do this ?

Is there a website or an app that helps me do that? I have seen a few apps like magic bricks and zero broker, but they don’t cater to my needs and they are way too off from Zillow/Redfin kind of experience.

If you are not looking for rental income, dont think apartments are great choice in India as they are way too overpriced and are depleting assets.

Look at just buying land, farm land or a plot in city outskirts. There is much possibility for asset appreiciation.

There are risks to owning real estate in India especially remotely that don't exist in the USA. People can illegally occupy or scam you out of any property including apartments, especially when managed remotely. I know coworkers in the USA who made good money from Indian real estate but I know as many who lost money or got swindled (by builders). Also those who made money had either "connections" or family closely monitoring/managing their property (or both). If these things do not apply to you I would advise against investing in Indian real estate

  • Too much hassle and not much gain. Unless family needs I’d stay away and not jump-in for investment purposes.

Thanks !! Can you throw some light on not much gain? Is it the return is not that great or just the whole process of making the purchase happen is so painful and not worth the pain ?

  • Adjust it for inflation against $. My india real estate is down 50 percent, because rupee has deflated. By far my worst performing investment in the last 15 years.

  • Really bad. It’s almost a second job if you rent it out or even buy it to sell later.
