Starting a job at Google soon. My country does not have a backlog and currently I have 20 months left on my STEM OPT. Would it be wise to start the green card process now? Is 20 months enough to go from start to finish? I think it may be safer as compared to h1b.

So, a lot of it depends on Google immigration team and whether they will be able to batch PWD, can do recruitment concurrently etc Basically there are steps in the PERM process and employers can go one after another or can combine them and reuse some of the docs if someone whose roles and requirement under which green card filed is similar to yours.

It is 100 percent not safer to do this on F1 STEM OPT than H1B since getting to a stage where AOS (I-1485) is filed which is the last step of the process can take 2 years but it can be shorter as well, again depending on how fast Google immigration does.

20 months imo for GC in hand is going to be tough but I-1485 pending (which lets you stay in country) and GC-EAD (temp work permit) is more than likely so you can continue employment. Its definitely possible.

I heard google wont need PWD. You can jump straight to PERM. And after that you can file i485 and i140 concurrently. The down thing is you cant go outside us until you get your GC, unless you get h1b. Source: my startup applied gc while i was on OPT. Got my gc in 2 years after starting the process

@BcKbJLbgj that will depend on whether OP future job role matches someones existing future job but you are correct, likely there is someone with matching skills.

  • Go for it. Even if you get EAD then also it's good. Things are slow these days but should improve over time
