hi all! first time posting just got off the phone with the recruitor and heres the deal: current base salary is $107000 (51/hr for 2080 hour work year) she’s offering $65/hr which is $135200. [question 1. is there a wiggle room here? i want to ask for $75/hr] but it’s a “3+ month contract to start” position, upon which, depending on my performance, it could lead to either extension of the contract for, say, another 3 months, or a full time conversion. (question 2:) is this worth leaving a very cushy and comfortable and permanent job for? + to be honest, ive been pretty unsatisfied here because of how unstimulating the work is and nobody seem like hard workers. i’m kind of ready to grind again. but I’m also aware of the risk this brings. I am getting a little too comfortable and complacent here. + spotify is one of my dream companies to work for thank you! #dataengineer #capitalone #spotify + wtf is a legal operations team, but apparently that’s what’s gonna be
If you are on h1b .. don’t do that.. try to find full time..
I’m a citizen!
You can take risk and give it a shot if you are desperate...why don’t you apply full-time roles directly at Spotify? again remember being a contractor you will be a second class citizen in the company..
Interns are 1st class citizens. We are second.
I understand you're not happy currently and Spotify sounds amazing to you, but would caution against such emotionally laced, but questionable choices. 1099 (Spotify) vs W2 employment (cap1) is significantly different. Between taxes, PTO, healthcare, other fringe benefits, the usual mantra is to take your hourly rate on W2 and at least double it. So if you estimate ~$50/hr on W2 at Cap1, push for ~$100/hr at Spotify. The other risk is how insecure your job is as a 1099. While you can be fired as W2 easily, 1099 is even more dangerous without safety measures like unemployment benefits.
This was a great reply. Thank you. Going to see try to go through interview process just to get the taste of their interview process, then drop out and apply through regular channel again. Thank you
Just FYI OP should determine if the contract role is a W-2 one, which would make it more like ~$75/hr at Spotify (since then they cover your employment taxes)
What level are you in right now? And what are you looking for at Spotify? It's either NYC or SF. From the look of it you are either TDP or SA. I would not do it when you are just in first year or two of your career. You want a place you can ride on to get some career growth. Never trust contract to hire BS (unless there's a fix conversation date on contract); pretend it's just a contract job and if you are good with the pay then it's cool.
I’m a y2 tdp in nyc ok thank you
I think it’s starting to make sense not to do this
I don't think it's a terrible idea to go. I wouldn't leave before the 401k is fully vested at the beginning of your year 3. Secondly, I think Spotify is probably a better stepping stone than C1. The new york office at c1 has become sad lately. I would put them on the back burner as you apply to other companies and take it if nothing comes your way. One thought came up... They have you as contractor because they want to vet you. Do you think you'll definitely get the full time position if you went 3months as a contractor? I think your next job interviews at other companies will put that in perspective.
I don't think Spotify is a bad idea... Contractor itself is, unless you know for sure it's really a short term vetting and not permanent contractor type. You should try and ask on public Blind channel for their track record of full time conversions
Good luck with whatever way you go!
Did you end up at Spotify?

What is your current net worth?
You know contract means you’re gonna have to worry about taxes and insurance on your own, right!
Oh one more thing, the contracting company is offering to do full Health Insurance! And no I didn’t know the tax part...
Has the number 1099 ever come up? If so, you’ll have to pay taxes annually, instead of having it deducted by your employer.
