Facebook recruiter tells me Product TPM has Product Manager type scope for an internal team.
Is Product TPM != TPM
Is Product TPM almost ~ Product Manager but for an internal team.
Does TC differ for Product TPM? We know TPM < PM ~ SWE.

  • Lol recruiter is BSing. Product TPM ain’t no PM and it’s almost impossible to transfer to a PM role at this point in time.

    Also, TC is way lesser than a PM/SWE.

  • There's three major TPM orgs at FB. One supports Infra, the other their AR/VR org and the third supports various products. This third category is called product TPM. It is extremely unlikely to have PM responsibilities - your product area will most likely have a dedicated PM.
    It is hard to transfer internally to a PM. You will need VP level approval and you'll also get down leveled (and comp will decrease).
    If your long term plan is to continue being in product, do not take on the TPM role. You'll end up wasting both yours and the team's time.

  • Interesting, I thought TPM > PM, since they're more technical.

    Alright, there's enough anecdotal data here to make me approach this fully aware of the difference between the PM and TPM roles. I might at least want to interview for the practice.

  • I think transferring to PM is easy but only possible after at least a year. You need to do an internal interview, but you get to have a few mentors and do multiple mock interviews with them until they tell you that you are ready. As far as tc, TPM is same as DS, Product Designer etc. Not a huge difference for PM/SWE unless you are L6+. Definitely worth it imo

    • internal transfers between roles are very common. You do need to interview but you dont need VP approval for that, this is BS. In fact most managers are very supportive and give you many resources to like finding mentors and ppl to do mock up interviews etc.

    • also TPM at FB means Technical Program Manager, but practically speaking their job is similar to PMs but for horizontal or more infra teams. But yes, there is no official title called Technical Product Manager
