Asking this makes me question whether you actually got into Stanford/MIT.

PhD from any school won’t pay off money-wise.

Although I basically had never heard of CS before my PhD, so I would not have gotten into it without doing the PhD.

If you've second thoughts about PhD, probably don't go for it.

Doing a PHD to eventually get a non-research industry job is idiotic. The only job for which PhD is an absolute necessity is a professorship - unless you want to become a professor, don’t bother.

MIT in many ways is... properly rated but overly put on a pedestal.

The single most important thing in grad school is publishing. If you have one paper in a mediocre journal you're not a hot shot, even with MIT written on your sheet of paper.

I got into MIT and rejected THEM. Prospects for publishing where I went were higher because of less course requirements. And I produced.

Do it if you enjoy research. And if you do enjoy it that much, you should never really go into industry anyway.
