I laugh when I hear my caramel frappe-drinking colleagues that even if WW3 breaks out, it won’t affect them because “wars are now fought from a distance with drones and new tech instead of gunfights”. MAKE NO MISTAKE, if a full fledged war happens, they WILL bring back mandatory military service, they WILL make you go to the frontlines and die for your country. If you refuse to go, you WILL get life in prison (it used to be a death penalty in the 1900s).
No, your 800K TC at Google doesn’t mean that you will be commanding troops from the safety of your home office because “you’re too smart to be a foot soldier”. In the past, educated citizens would not be recruited as soldiers because there were so few university graduates that demand for smart people greatly outweighed supply. Today, nearly half of all North Americans hold a bachelor degree. They don’t need an army of programmers.
If and When things get bad and your country runs out of army personnel, you WILL be shipped to the frontlines.

There's zero chance of a draft being desperate enough to reach me. Old enough, too many physical ailments.
Even in WW2 the draft stopped once you hit 45. Then it was lowered to 37 in 1942. And now it's 26 is when you're out of draft range (which is a lot lower than people think). If you suffer serious physical disabilities then you're out as well.
