Wondering what comes after cloud for the senior engineers who have built their careers riding the cloud wave. Where do all the Distributed systems experts go after all big companies have built their clouds and small ones can longer afford to build their own cloud. From what I can tell, those who wanted to enter cloud have already entered and built the major systems (storage, compute, database) ... And many of the technicals knowledge/skills/expertise doesn’t seem to be very useful in other places.
After cloud comes heaven
Not for DIgital Ocean, 😐
They upload their consciousness and live inside their creation
Edge computing
This is really just an optimization in a DS. Pushing compute / content as close to edge as possible has been done for 10 years at least.
After cloud comes the thunder.
Cloud 2.0
An era of reinventing all software to work natively with cloud paradigms. That should take another 30 years or so.
Seriously... then we'll be on to the next thing.
People doing cloud and DS now, if they've been in it long enough, were doing something else before. You're going to evolve and keep learning, so you'll be doing something else after. Assuming there really is an after and systems don't just get more and more distributed over time with IOT and physical expansion to outer space.
Infra is here to stay. The amount of data that has to be processed is increasing every day. Newer, more efficient systems will always be needed. Moore's law is ending too.
Is it actually ending? Seems like it just went from 2 years to 2.5 years. Still have 7nm , 5nm, 3nm chips coming out ? And then there are some interesting new techniques they are starting to apply outside of making the chip smaller
What about quantum computing?

They say the same about building a car engine.
What do you mean? How frequently are new car engines built? Has it been a perennially hot field or cyclical with new stuff happening every 10 years or so
Point is new car engine are always in development, be it new improvement or brand new feature. Developers writing cloud will still be there working on new and old features. Take AWS. Resizing EBS live is a pretty cool feature, something they couldn’t do for ten year. Perhaps one day they will customize RDS postgres so upgrade can be done live without any downtime, including changing parameter groups. Cloud like car engine is a fixed concept - but the features that come with the fixed concept is very dynamic.
