Is working in FANG(+microsoft?) and the other unicorns (or whatever they are called...well known companies like airbnb uber yelp etc) really different? I am an entry level UX designer still in school. just wanted to know what are the pros and cons as a worker and as a designer. would love to hear your experiences.

If you want to be effective you need to branch out beyond “problem solving”. Every HCI application I read has the same structured portfolio that breaks down process with photos of white boards and sticky notes, but when asked what work they did, and who owned the visuals, most ack that another designer did that work.

Process is only a small part of the equation, you need to study other products, understand the constraints they were built in and begin to build some form of intuition based on historical context.

thanks for the tips. for process portfolio , how would u evaluate the candidate who led the whole project and did the visuals, but the output is not AS good as the UI designer’s works, or the product has not been shipped? just curious because that is my situation as Im working on my portfolio (i worked in a startup)
