Why did you accept a job at Facebook?

I'm currently at Amazon, but have an offer for FB, I honestly can't see a reason to switch except for the money - and even then with the Amazon stock price the way it is, it's hard to justify moving.

For those who recently accepted a job at Facebook I'm curious what was it that enticed you? I'm especially interested in folks who switched from another FAANG. It just seems like such a morally reprehensible company, almost like working for a tobacco company. Why did you do you? Was it worth it?

Good question. I declined the FB recruiter’s offer to talk as the TC at Amazon due to my RSUs is sky high, and I want to be able to sleep at night.

Amazon’s not perfect and neither am I, but FB is seriously damaging society. I just wouldn’t be able to live with myself.

  • i had an amazon offer and switched from google. To me, it was better perks, smarter teammates, and comparable brand.

I often find a lot of amazon people telling me they had a FB and google offer though. I definitely believe them.

  • Most of the folks here who are saying that they rejected Facebook's offer are rejected by Fb during interviews. They are just trying to calm their ego. Don't believe them. These people will jump to Facebook at first possible opportunity but wants other to decline.

Sorry, I want to be able to sleep at night and look myself in the mirror in the morning. Amazon isn’t perfect and neither am I, but for me that means not working at FB or having an account at any of their companies.

I’m confident you were in touch with your college friends and family before FB, and would be if it didn’t exist.

What’s morally reprehensible is that lies, half truths and disinformation is sold to the highest bidder and targeted super effectively at users. For example, women newly diagnosed with breast cancer are pushed ads for quack cures like “cell quickening”, “colloidal silver” and apple cider vinegar treatments despite higher death rates among patients who refuse traditional medicine.

In 2016 FB was taking political ads paid for in rubles, when its actually illegal for non citizens to meddle in US elections. FB has facilitated the undermining of democratic elections, enabled a genocide and live streamed an armed massacre.

I wouldn’t work there, couldn’t sleep at night.

It's totally acceptable to not agree with FB's values, but I feel people like Amazon (not saying you in particular) are brainwashed by the media or slightly delusional.

FB has 1000s of engineers working on containing the spread of misinformation. Recently we took down a Trump ad since it was factually incorrect. Moreover, I don't know the details of the breast cancer ads you're talking about, but we're focused on making sure that doesn't happen again through better ML models and content flagging. Of course, as an engineer you can understand that few incidents will slip through the cracks.

Zuck is one of the most thoughtful leaders and has built an engineer first, performance driven paradise. We have a regulatory board so Zuck doesn't have unlimited power on policy decisions.

@xcvbnn what are the amazing morally high standards that Amazon holds that attracted you to working there?

No company is perfect, but given your very detailed view about how morally reprehensible FB is, would absolutely love to know what are those specific moral standards that drew you to Amazon? And also please do us the favor of explaining all the negative press coverage that Amazon has gotten and how you know that is false.

Most Amazonians are hell bent upon justifying their choice (or in most cases no choice) to work at Amazon. And I am willing to be extremely unpopular among my colleagues and say that they are just purely being jealous and playing the moral superiority card as their only option to prove superiority. no doubt that a lot of them love working there , but I am happy to argue that it's because of most other factors like TC, location, field of work etc. rather than an affinity to the the high moral standards and a sense of doing good for society at Amazon.

Also please do enlighten us on how shareholders can remove Jeff and not allow him to exert control over all of Amazon. And how democratic decision making is at Amazon.

Well, maybe I am just a peasant and not an intellectual like you.
