Recently been acquired into GBS and need to understand what I might be getting myself into. Our mid sized firm was acquired for my division, how is GBS? What do I need to prepare for? Should I be jumping ship ASAP?

  • Thanks I'm intermediate/mid level. Leaving my current company would be a pretty drastic paycut ~25-30% currently or 40-60% if i were to take my retention offer in base alone and leave after 1yr, hard pill to swallow

Reference -- in Canada and being paid USD level comp.

I’d really love some management churn above me.

IBM needs an entire generation of mgmt to retire and then if it’s still alive can start to be a good place to work again

I’m in GBS. It is absolutely dreadful. Lazy boomer leadership is killing the company and attrition is sky high and unsustainable. Clients all unequivocally hate us and competitors are laughing at us. Benefits are abysmal if you haven’t already gotten the briefing. You should absolutely be looking to get out immediately.

GBS is a consultancy sector of IBM. You will be mostly working on IBM external project with client. Prepare to work with remote team and incompetent leadership/management. The way GBS work with client is that their contract time based. They want to 1. Increase length of contract, 2. Keep client from jumping ship. To maintain a project in a slow but acceptable speed is common.
If you are in middle of your career and know how things are doing. You should leave ASAP. If you are in early career, stay less than 2 years.

Regardless of what they told you Taos is going to be choked out and integrated and you won’t have any impact on IBM. Red Hat was the biggest acquisition and…bye Jim.

  • Jump ship. They will lay you off within the next 2 years. I know this from first hand experience
