Leave Salesforce Development?

Apr 25 4 Comments

I’ve been a Salesforce developer for the past 8 years. I find myself as a developer in a world of business folks. Development/coding standards, designs are never prioritized, rather it’s about making money.

I’m curious to gauge to communities opinion around leaving SFDC development and going to pure software development.

- long term salary differences?
- enjoyment of work?

YOE: 8
TC: 170k

SF dev is niche and comes with its own perks that you are probably well aware off (easy remote, easy to make impact, easy money, etc).
Transitioning to “regular” dev will take time. Realistically a year with a daily grind of LC, design, and developing non-lightning, non-apex, non-soql expertise.
With 8 YOE it may be smarter to push further into SF tech.
But follow what your heart desires.

Salary wise, IC SF consulting peaks at what you are currently making. Management/leadership SF consulting is $250k

FAANG has SF teams too, paying $300k for IC.

Regular devs pull more long term. Peaking at 500k for the most part.

Let me know how this goes. I’m leaving Salesforce development now. I have previous experience with Java and Ruby on Rails. I’ve been failing my tech interviews so I’m trying to spend more time on LC.

I’ve been trying to look at how to up my TC from $160k to $250k and it looks improbable as a Salesforce dev. And I also hate being so close to the business and want to build cool stuff instead.

  • Do you all feel that transition to a software development/engineering position will be difficult if I aggressively study leercode/system design/data models?

Will companies not consider me for the roles because of the Salesforce background?
