I left msft before 1 year and have to pay back sign on and relo

I got paid 18k relo and 25k sign on, but for some reason I have to pay 14k “taxes”

Is this normal? Will the government give me that 14k back as well as the taxes I paid on all the bonuses?

Also can I just ghost them ? I don’t live in usa anymore(in Canada but plan on coming back to a different state)

Edit: I have to pay an EXTRA 14k. I really don’t understand why. I was paid 18+25 which was taxed already. Why do I have to pay 14k more ?

  • Don't respond and see if they follow up. Pretend you never got their notices. Lawsuits are very expensive to claw back $14K

@credit karma, karma is a b****. Bad advice. Why take a chance when you know you owe the money? Not ethical either.

You joined 2021 and left in 2022 right? That’s because you left after the fiscal year. So taxes are already done, that’s why you owe the full amount.

Yes you’ll get a reimburse from the government even you do your taxes in 2023. It’s just an income readjustment

You can readjust it when you do your taxes in 2023. A friend of mine went through the similar situation and paid the relocation. The company didn’t ask to return the sign on bonus but they took the relocation +tax back.

The employer will issue form W-2 C that will reflect your situation (lower wage after they deduct the money you sent them back). Next time you file taxes you will submit it and that will trigger the tax refund. It is not supported by TurboTax you will need to hire a real cpa.

  • You need to bay back the gross amount. And file your taxes to recoup the withholding. It sucks but if you don't they won't send you an updated w2 and you'll be screwed for filing. Should have anticipated that
