Worth jumping to Google SRE from LinkedIn dev?

Apr 12 8 Comments

I'm staff swe in infra team at LinkedIn. Offered staff (L6) in Google cloud sre team. I prefer dev role but I'm being told by recruiter and hiring manager that it's the same as dev role, just focused on site stability and robustness etc. Want to hear the truth from Googlers here.

TC 490k, offer 560k

  • Just take the Swe role instead. Sres are paid lower but 560 looks above midpoint for l6

SREs are paid on par with SWE. And not uncommon to make more… due to oncall pay - some get overtime for being oncall outside of work hours, and some get vacation time per hour of oncall they’re on. Not a bad gig tbh

Lol. SRE gets paid the same or even more than SWE at Google due to being oncall.

Search around for Google SRE descriptions, there’s a few types but I’m assuming you’re referring to SWE-SRE. At L6 I’ll be honest, I’m not familiar with that level and what it entails, but I do know you can switch from SRE to pure SWE somewhat easily (someone correct me if I’m wrong). SREs at Google are very highly regarded at the same level as SWE. Some might even be higher tbh

  • Yeah make sure it’s a SWE-SRE role and not a SA-SRE role. You can transfer from SWE-SRE to SWE easier than from SA-SRE. Also when I interviewed my recruiter said it was for a SWE-SRE role but during team matching that was not always the case so make sure to specify expectations with managers during team matching.
