Today ends my biggest career mistake yet. I left a FT job in NYC and took a calculated risk to consult on a major project halfway across the country. This was supposed to be a 3 year project. Everything that could go wrong went wrong. Now after one year, my time was cut short. I am jobless in a city that i don’t have a network in. I will go back to NY soon with my tail between my leg and hopefully will find a new gig soon. Feeling foolish and stupid. Not much of a question just venting i guess
Life goes on. In a couple of years you'll laugh about it.
If you don’t mind SF go SF, NYC job market sucks.
I have been looking all over. SF is so very expensive. Haven’t had any luck with interviews thus far
Someone rightly said that only those who tried can fail. I am sure you had your reasons when you made the move and I think it is fine if it didn’t turn out to be as fruitful as you thought. Of course, it sucks but I believe you are now more experienced than you ever were. Good luck!
Should be all good. you will find a way through so don't think you are totally lost
It’s only your biggest career mistake if you fail to learn and grow from it. Some things are bad luck, and sometimes our own actions build a bridge toward bad (or good) luck to “happen” to us. In the long run you will make more successes and more mistakes, and therefore more growth. Best of luck bouncing back!
Sounds like a rough time, but like you said, it was a calculated risk. Look at it as a learning experience and be happy that you will have a good story to tell when it comes time to interview elsewhere. It’s not like you were fired. You’ll be fine. Start preparing for your next step and you may ultimately look back on this hiccup in a positive light
No mistakes, only learnings. I'm sure there's a lot you took away from this experience, and you got to see a new city you wouldn't have seen otherwise. That job in NYC will still be there. If not with that prior firm, then with a new one that might be ever better than the last. In the meantime, enjoy yourself! The best is yet to come.
What do you do - we are hiring in NYC?
My experience is mainly in financial operations
Had to do this not long ago. It's hard to reposition, but the story and experience is fun. Sadly you're in probably a better spot than i am. Very few people need a generalist when it comes to management and ops... But I will say, if you already can talk about it like this, you're months ahead of where I was when it ended. Just be able to laugh about it, and think of the positives you contributed.
