Having heard all the horrors of working at Amazon (not judging), I wanted to hear about the positives. Especially from people who went from “Not Amazon” or “Maybe only for a couple of years for the money/career boost” to “OMG this is what I’ve always wanted to do” or “I was born for this shit”.
Anyone like that out here?

I’ve always heard bad stuff about Amazon, from folks who have worked there but looking at long timers always wondered what makes them tick.

Amazon/AWS churns our features at such a fast pace, that it is motivating me to at least experience the ride. They must be doing something right.

Anyone?

I love it. The LPs match my personality and strengths. They are taken very seriously there and aren't just empty words. If they resonate with you, it's worth trying. If not, definitely avoid.

I’m with them on really enjoying the company. Additionally from what I’ve seen, I’m getting paid at the high range of the next level of G/FB. So basically L5 at amazon getting paid E5 range at google. At least based on Gs offer price. Refreshers and stock growth might offset that the first few years.

I love working at Amazon - have been here for about 5 years in which I grew from SDE1 to SDE3. Amazon is a no nonsense place - you work hard, learn shit load (both in tech and being a leader). It is a place for builders, and I like being one.

Of course, not everyone has had an experience as positive as mine, but you asked for personal stories and this is mine.

  • I feel that I was destined to never work for Amazon. I’d like to see my family and not cry at my desk.

If you went home at 3pm every day that'd be an argument. If you're proud that you can do that once a year without getting fired that's not exactly something to brag about.

It would be close to rare to leave 3 pm daily not just at Amazon or another company unless u have that as a working arrangement. If ur leaving without a formal arrangement, I'm surprised ur face in not in your inbox

Ex-Microsoft here. Joined Amazon after 10 years in MSFT. Now I am a yellow badge i.e. 5+ years in Amazon. I wish I had made the switch earlier. The culture of Amazon resonates with me and more importantly leaders here have my respect. (I interact with VP/SVP/CEO quite often) I particularly enjoy the lack of hand-wavy BS from leadership.
