Why blame Facebook or IG for suicidal teens? It's just a platform....

Oct 5, 2021 71 Comments

IG's just a platform. It didn't create a toxic culture of self-comparison to peers.

The algorithm is not optimized to perpetuate the problem either, it's merely showing what people want to see.

People will always find a medium to engage in this ancient behavior, with or without IG. In the age of hyper connectivity, it’s inevitable.

Do you agree?

If not, how would you change social media to tackle this issue?

I think not intentionally exploiting their insecurities with targeted content to make them feel worse (so they'll continue to consume more) would be a decent start...

    • The research says 30% of kids feel better after using IG, 40% feels indifference, and 20% feels worse. So majority of the kids feels no difference if not better

    • She abused the company’s trust and goodwill to keep everything (including CEO reviews) open for all employees.

And she cherry picked a lot of things out of context on areas she has no clue about

Yes and no. Self comparison has always been around but never at this scale. You have teenagers who don’t know any better comparing themselves to billionaire trust fund kids on IG.

Facebook can rank content in a way that reduces the exposure of toxic content. Facebook seems to do fine keeping pornography and terrorist recruitment off the platform. There is internal research brought to light that certain aspects of FB/IG are harmful, particularly teenage girls. Seems sensible to address this major issue rather than throw up our hands and do nothing. We make an effort to keep alcohol, motor vehicles, and major legal contracts away from underage people.

A survey of teenaged girls can’t establish a causal relationship between content on FB/IG and poor mental health. You’d have to do a different type of research for that.
