Moving back to NYC and looking to rent. I'm in my early thirties and single. Price aside, what's the best neighborhood to live in and why? I'm open to Brooklyn and Manhattan.

Update: Must have includes being accessible by multiple trains and near similarly aged people

TC $226,000

I like the Upper east side. Don't go above 92nd street

West village or lower Chelsea. Super bougie but also lots going on in terms of food and night life. Housing quality is generally not shit, but the really nice places are pretty expensive.

  • ^ if brooklyn is a contender, I will assume you’re excited about green space and a more communal neighborhood. Maybe look north of midtown east for Manhattan (being by Central Park is nice). But all of this is hard to evaluate without knowing what you want in a neighborhood? Similarly aged people around? Bars? Club scene? Quietier place that’s accessible by subway to many areas?

Must be accessible by multiple trains and similarly aged people would be nice. I'm excited about green space so Brooklyn Heights and Downtown Brooklyn are viable options

    • That’s my neck of the woods, so I support it! I’d visit before picking a spot if it’s either of those neighborhoods. Downtown Brooklyn’s neighborhood vibe and walkability is block by block (some spots off of Flatbush ave are not as walkable, you’ll be crossing the BQE to get the subway, etc.), while brooklyn heights is generally beautiful but has mostly older inventory. You’ll want to see the place in person and do your diligence on pest issues, landlords (Kushner Co owns a few properties in the area that experienced severe dilapidation during the august hurricane weather — tenants had to fight to get repairs). Good luck!

  • I lived in Upper West Side. I loved living there. I miss some people!!! If I go back to NYC, def UWS. (But I don't want to to back there. It’s too crowded, noisy, and dirty.)
