Are you a SWE that used to have a non-technical career? If so, how did you do it?

I'm an L6 at Google in a technical but non-coding role. Sick of the lack of job options in my field and lack of remote work options. I feel ill always need to work in the Bay, Seattle, NYC, or Austin and will always be tethered to these hubs if I want stable employment. Really considering a job change to become a SWE for a major pay cut (I'm at 500K now TC) but for increased job stability and options.

For SWEs that transitioned from non-technical (or technical but non-coding) careers, any tips or advice? Do you regret your decision? Thank you so much.

You are trying to transition from a non-technical role to a tech job so you won’t have to work in tech hubs?!!

I was in finance (not the good part of finance, the low paying paperwork processing part) and hated my job. I ended up stumbling on coding because I started writing scripts to automate repetitive parts of my job. I did a second degree (CS). Worked at a few startups and now am at Amazon.

We're in different positions because you already have good TC and will be take a cut if you make the switch. It was an easy decision for me since I doubled my salary when I switched.

I have no real tips for you but I definitely would encourage anyone to switch they think it'll make work more enjoyable/fulfilling
