approached by a recruiter for a position in the EDG (Engineering Development Group) at Mathworks Cambridge,UK. Is it a good place to work? What are the TC levels?

Currently doing my MS in CS (in the EU) and have 1.5 yoe before that.

Recruiter (being a recruiter) said that almost every new MSc/PhD grad has to go through this. Not sure if that's true though.

    • U have to go through this only if u join EDG, if u directly join a team then u are not required to.
My room mate had an offer from them and this was the primary reason for declining

MW employee here: EDG is a max-2 yr position to determine if you are a “good cultural fit” and “have the right skills” for the company. You spend about 50% time answering Tech Support calls. These are customers with “how do I do this?” Qs, not “I can’t install” Qs which are handled by Customer Support (different group). The other 50% is project engagements with dev teams who need your skill set. I believe those are “advertised” to EDG and you link up with the Dev Mgr who wants a person. Or you can ask around and “create your own” project (rarely done).

While you’re in EDG, you apply internally for openings. The goal is to find a position that makes you happy before the 2 yrs is up. MW benefits from EDG by getting really good, fresh, highly-qualifies tech support staff. EDGers benefit by getting up to 2 yrs to try out the company and various groups within it.
