i’m a student whose background is full stack product engineering. i’m interested in branching out and learning infra platform and working on a few side projects. i have no clue what platform infra is though?what kind of work do they do? what languages do they work in?

  • They usually work on... the infrastructure :-)) Depending on the team/company that can mean a bunch of things!

For example they could be working on CI/CD, logging and metrics, deployment and management of services, databases, data pipelines, building tools for other teams etc.

For example an ML infra team could work on a system/tool that would enable the SWE/MLE/DS to run and deploy experiments/models. It would provide versioning, rollbacks, some feature/model storage, ways to share them between people, serving them to the public for predictions etc.

As for the languages it again depends - I’ve seen lots of python, c/c++, go and bash.

    • Not at all - I’ve never worked on an infra team myself, though (but I did some infra work at previous companies where we didn’t have separate infra teams🤷‍♂️)
