Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Which company among popular tech companies have Managers enjoy and abuses the unchecked absolute power, authority, and autonomy. Some power examples includes
- Can hire almost anyone, has full control of interview loop or final say on the loop even if rest are not inclined. (FTE or Contractors)
- Can promote anyone with favoritism. Has almost no barrier for promotion and may require only 1-2 people to sign off on promotion who can be easily brought into the illusion.
- Can fire almost anyone (may not the rock stars, but any average Joe) even if not the worst performer of the team.
- Has absolute authority on projects and decision making. Can override engineers.
- [Bonus] Incompetent Manager will still survive by throwing others under the bus for failures.
- [Bonus] HR and VPs don't recognize this as problem.

I was at Amazon, it’s IMPOSSIBLE to hire someone who hasn’t passed the loops. Amazon created a position called bar raised with the sole purpose of making sure that doesn’t happen.

All the rest is equal between Amazon and Facebook. Difficult promotions and managers having PIP superpowers.

Pip superpowers sounds like issue on the HR powers, what’s my point, managers are the first responsable for having people under PIP, Ideally Good HR will start to monitor that Manager…. He should be contacted on weekly basis to show his work towards improving team performance and lower burden on her reports. Pip could be seen as a Manager problem too.
