WLB vs EE rating (putting my heart out)

Feb 19, 2021 9 Comments

My question is simple - is WLB possible along with EE (exceeds expectations) rating?

I have 5 years of experience and have never seen WLB even with ME (meet expectations) rating, may be it's my bad luck OR i am in wrong domain (engineering)

My current ORG in company has over expectations.
Even after slogging during weekdays and weekends all i just got is ME and with shrewd explanations from manager.

Sometimes feels like tech industry is not for me, it's more become "people and political skills" rather than "tech skills"

This is GREED for money which force us to put our WLB and health at stake which is bad and what even worse is after putting these things at stake, there is no appreciation for work.
This is more like gambling

Slogging since high school, first IIT JEE (toughtest exam in india after 12th class for admission into engineering) and then in college doing Competitive programming.

Now it feels like leaving this domain and go back to old good days and do whatever we want to accomplish when in school (painting, music , etc)
but again question is where to get income from for sustaining ourselves? Stucked in this SLAVE CHAIN.

Can someone please help or enlighten, how to hold on this phase of life and if this is normal?
Feeling very low

  • when youre 80 just remember that no one will care that you worked those weekends or helped push that shinny new product that management wants. Fuck that, make sure you are making time to live your life, these companies would fire us in a heartbeat, if it saved them money. You owe that company nothing, do your 8 hours and clock the fuck out. If they have a problem with that start applying for new jobs

I completely agree with u and this is how it should be but irony is that it doesn't seems easy as it look.
And as we go senior this seems more tough to follow as people expect responsibility and all those stuffs from us , this is even more difficult in the context of Indian companies where there is cut throat culture.
Onlye few hand pick companies are there which acknowledges WLB.
Rest all are just treating as slaves and expect to be available 24x7

It is easy. Just set boundaries and balance yourself.

The whole premise of your post was “I want to do better than everyone else! I want exceeds!” Then you try to say it’s not easy. :)

Maybe take a big wholistic look at this.

Working extra is appreciated, but isn’t necessarily promotion or EE material.

Work smarter, not harder. Realize what’s adding value and visible versus just putting in time.

    There is always more work.

While EEs are not directly proportional to the probability of getting a promotion, it does contribute to a strong case. So, yes apart from the difference in bonus (10 % to 14 %), the benefits are long term.

WLB is a myth like a unicorn. Stop chasing it.

  • Org? As this is not the case in all orgs, I’ve personally seen teams with extremely good WLB(and they get paid the same) and extremely poor.
