I am looking for some advice on negotiating remote work upon receiving an offer from Amazon. So the recruiter reached out to me about a role in NY and I live in CO. I thought I'd be crazy not to talk with Amazon and honestly wanted to learn more. The first phone interview went really well. the recruiter asked me if I'd be willing to move to NY. I told her that, honestly, we were pretty rooted, but that I'd have to see what the offer was to make a decision. I was progressed to the next call with the hiring manager and It went fantastic. No talk about the relocation at all. Next I had another onsite prep call with another recruiter where they asked about location and I candidly told them that I'd be open to It, but that i'd have to see what an offer looked like. Finally, I had my onsite interview and survived the 6 hour long 7 person interview. It was overwhelmingly positive and the last interviewer indicated that he would be shocked if I didn't have a positive outcome. He totally shouldn't have said that and I took It with a grain of salt. My total TC is 95K base 20K RSU in CO. Based on my research, the NY offer would be something like 160-180TC. This is a substantial increase, but the COL is so much higher in NY. It wouldn't allow me to save or invest any more money. So that's the background. Now I'm curious that if an offer is presented, could I request a remote work scenario? I feel that I have been honest with the recruiters and loved the team I interviewed with. I do think I'd be a fit and would excel in the job.
What they heard was that you would be open to moving...for the right offer. If the team doesn’t have remote folks already, it is unlikely that an external hire would be the first.
Yeah that’s really fair! Thanks so much for the advice
I was in this situation with another company and decided to not go through with the interview. At the end of the day, it’s not like they’ll offer me double salary to get me to move, no matter how well I do in the interview.
NYC and CO are so different in lifestyle - you really need to ask yourself if you want to live there...
This is true. Part of the problem with moving is more personal and has to do with my wife’s medical situation. It’s be tough to find new doctors for her infertility. Thanks for the advice. Here’s to hoping It works out in our favor :)
You should be able to find excellent healthcare providers in NYC... that said, it would be a lifestyle change and may be better to be closer to family and have the support nearby... good luck!
Can you use Amazon offer to up your current comp ?
It’s a possibility for sure, but the area of the business I work in is underfunded. I’m pretty eager to work for a different company and loved the team and job description for amazon
Why is amazon so resistant to remote work? Just hire the best people, people! Jeez. They better get on board; everything is changing.

You can ask, but I’m sure they’ll say no. Did you say you were only interested in remote while interviewing?
>Amazon doesn't really do remote work Maybe at low levels, know plenty of folks who remote most days
Meanwhile in my team there are a couple of remotes including me - was hired in a different part of the US - working out of one office and team seats on the other side of the USA.... So ... Yeah they do
