Most folks on Blind seem to be obsessed with big tech players, desperate to be hired by them. No judgment, but I have absolutely no desire to work for any of them. No amount of TC could get me to move to work for them. Why am I not feeling the lure?
Perhaps you don’t know what you’re missing.
Very possible! I definitely wonder that. Do you feel fulfilled overall working at Amazon?
No, which is why I’m moving to Microsoft! ;). But the growth I’ve had there is incredible and I do not regret this step in my career.
I make $0.5M TC and as a result just bought 635 acres in Idaho to set up my own private ski hill. I hate the silly racist leftist creepiness of FAANGs but damned if they don’t pay well and allow me to get to my life goals.
That’s awesome - how do you have the time?
That's amazing!
No amount of tc = one of the following: 1. You come from money 2. You make a very high tc already and the difference is 10-20% 3. You’re single and don’t own or thought of buying a house 4. You don’t make a high tc and don’t realize you can make double Sorry ain’t buying that :) Now all that tc talk aside - I worked at big and small companies - I’m currently at amazon learning a lot , enjoying good wlb and building my career to the next level The money is a nice bonus that makes me able to sustain the household and enjoy my out of work activity There isn’t really anything special in working for smaller or bigger companies - what matters is the team , product and challenge - and who you learn from. I moved to amazon once I outgrew the small company I was at and moved for 80% higher tc (especially as you can’t count paper money when most startups will never ipo)
interesting, well I definitely don't come from money. Quite the opposite, in fact. My TC is 100k, wife and two kids. I live well below my means and am content with my pay, and actually incredibly thankful for it. Perhaps, as you say, I can make more and don't realize it.
Well , we are lacking context - where you live , what’s the position and how much experience. Question is - assuming you could do double - without really compromising your wlb and challenge / fun at work - why wouldn’t you? That’s at least the conclusion I got to. Also helps that the people who live with you - your family cell - are at the end of the day the important thing that you work for.
Bottom line it’s not only tc - and don’t get comfortable - keep evolving
I do agree there, I need to feel like I'm learning, growing. Perhaps once that stops, fang is the natural progression
You don’t think you can learn at FAANG cos? I know I did.
To each their own. But still op, I’d advise you you work for some big company for a yet or two. It’s just a good experience - big projects, tight processes, big pool of people and Ideas
I think you have to consider where people are located. If you live in the Bay Area 100k means you are living in a studio apartment in SF or living in a one bedroom and commuting from Oakland. Moving to FANG or a similar company is the easiest way out of this. There are lots of engineers in the bay working at startups with years of experience getting paid theoretical money that have to live in the East Bay to survive.
Work is work. I think of it like this - what is the company going to give me that seperates them from the others. This is a business relationship in which they make billions and I want to capitalize on as much of that as I can. There are no pensions, long term incentives for loyalty anymore and most understand that. Do what's best for you. FAANG has great pay and benefits with large sign-ons and options. No matter who we work for, we should work hard but the second the business relationship is not benefitial to me, I'm out. Sounds harsh but that sentiment is also resident within the company as well.
Lol OP why did you change username right after the poll?
Sorry lol, I try to change it every time I hop on here. Just habit
Working for amazon seems worth a try if you have connections at other places, and enough money in the bank where it doesnt matter if you last very long or not. Cant imagine coming here like many do on a visa
You tell us.
Trying to figure it out, I've always felt like an outsider that doesn't understand mass appeal of most anything.
the mass appeal is probably TC, what’s yours?
