Hi, I'm a newly graduated student who just joined our company. I was reached out by team A and B at the meantime last December for team match. Based on my background and my interest, I preferred teamA and the manager was also looking forward to having me to his team. However, after the talk with teamB, I was told by team B's recruiter that I was directly assigned to teamB without asking my decision. Even I insisted that I preferred team A, the recruiter told me that team A didn't have the budget. So I was assigned to teamB finally. But after I got hired, I was able to find that the manager of teamA hired another person(we even had the same starting date!) in the company's internal source, which shows that he does have the budget. Now, my manager(teamB) assigned me a project that is not related to my background at all, which is the reason that I would like to join the other team during the team match. I also talked to my manager that my background doesn't match the current project at all. But he tried to persuade me to take the project as the purpose of learning. By the way, I'm female, who is the only female in the current team. I'm not sure if this is the reason that both my team's recruiter and my manager insisted me to stay in his team. I felt like I got cheated by the recruiter. As a newbie in career, I really don't know what I should do. Should I contact HR and ask for switching to another team?
They already hired someone else, so it's too late. Doubt anyone will be willing to make the effort to swap you two at this point. Sorry this happened. If you're really unhappy with treatment at B and not just the recruiter, look for a team C or another company
Suck it up, I didn't even know what team I would join until my first day. As a new grad your "background" is not really that important.
Improvise. Adapt. Overcome
Survive. Escape. Resist. Evade.
Got the same issue. OP how did you resolve it
As a new graduate it’s important to both develop new skills (something not in your background) and to attempt to gel with your team. If you feel strongly that you should be in the other team and don’t want to attempt to make it work where you are then by all means go to HR. When you do so, be prepared for some push back. My two cents: Try out where you’re assigned, if you hate it after 3-6 months start polishing the resume and try to get to the other team or head somewhere else.
