Hi everyone,

I am a Sr. PM at Amazon with no H1B and I am currently on my OPT (just started). Watching the news has been really stressfull in the past few weeks. I would love to know what our wonderful Blind community thinks about these two questions-

(a) How likely is it that OPT will be cancelled? As many others, I broke my butt to come here to the US and took some huge ass loans. I am sure there are people who might be in similar shoes. Any advice?

(b) If Trump does end up scrapping the OPT, how do I proceed from there? I have heard thsr canadian PR might take 10-12 months (depending on a thousand other factors offcourse). Should i pursue that?

Status- Just joined amazon as a new grad Sr. PM post my MBA two weeks ago!

    (a) No one knows
    (b) Amazon will happily send you to Canada and apply for your H1B. Just ask your L6+ manager to open a position for you there.

I am in the same boat as you and this is what my manager told me. I am still L4. As you said you're a senior, you might be L5 and things might even be easier for you.

  • OPT will not be canceled, period. Students will not come to US in huge numbers and many Universities will have shut down, if so

Ending OPT would be the stupidest move at this point. It’s like investing in something and then not reaping any of the rewards of doing so.

Literally no one is going to pay $100k to go to zoom classes at U of wherever without OPT.

If Cheeto Jesus figures out a way to fuck up OPT someone will come along to fix it next year.

OPT is here to stay. They may cut OPT extension. I don't think it was ever needed.
They will find a solution that doesn't hurt University revenue and manage unemployment. Cutting down extension is the easiest path.
