Great problem space, meh team vs meh problem space, amazing team
Hi, I’m at a crossroads in my career right now. I have multiple offers from really promising startups.
Among the two front runners, one works in one of of the most inspiring problem spaces there is. It’s a space that I’ve been dreaming of working in for years. But, every interview round that I’ve had with the team has left me underwhelmed. They are good people, they just don’t seem super competent. If you’re looking to disrupt a big, entrenched sector, I believe you need super intelligent people with a drive to want to be the best. These folks are just average intelligent people who care about work life balance.
The Other company is in a boring, overlooked B2B space, but their team is incredible. Every interaction with every team member, including the recruiters, left me deeply impressed. Their interview process is thoughtful and meticulous, the way they organize their work and decide what to build next is even better than what I’ve seen at Facebook.
My gut instinct is telling me to go with the company that has the better team, but I’d love to get some other thoughts here. Has anyone been in a similar situation? What decision that you make and what was the outcome of it?

That will get exhausting after a while, no matter how excited you are about the problem space. The second company sounds more like they have their act together. Even if the product/space isn’t that interesting itself, there’s probably a lot of opportunity to learn from the team and find creative ways to solve “boring” problems.
What do they do that's great for deciding what to build next?
